Quick Summary

B2B E-Commerce is Growing 3x Faster Than B2C — Here is What the Data Shows

  • Global B2B e-commerce GMV surpassed $20 trillion in 2025 — roughly 5x the size of global B2C e-commerce — and is growing at 18% annually versus 6% for B2C.
  • The shift driving this: B2B buyers under 40 (millennials and Gen Z) expect the same self-service experience they get from Amazon — not phone calls, sales reps, and emailed PDFs.
  • Platforms are responding: Shopify B2B launched in 2022, WooCommerce B2B has multiple mature solutions, and NetSuite’s B2B portal features have expanded significantly in 2025–2026.
  • The biggest opportunity for software teams: B2B merchants need the same sophistication (ERP integration, tiered pricing, credit management, bulk ordering) that was previously only justified for enterprise.

B2B e-commerce has been “about to explode” for a decade. It is now actually exploding. The catalyst is demographic — the buyers in procurement roles at mid-size companies are increasingly people who grew up buying online. They do not want to call a sales rep. They do not want to wait 3 days for a quote. They want to log into a portal, see their negotiated price, add 200 units to cart, and check out. Just like Amazon.

What B2B Buyers Want in 2026

  • Instant pricing visibility — their negotiated price should be visible when they log in, without asking
  • Self-service order placement — bulk orders, reorders, scheduled orders without sales rep involvement
  • Invoice and payment management — pay invoices online, view account balance, download statements
  • Order history and tracking — real-time status, not an emailed update 3 days later
  • Net terms checkout — Net 30/60/90 processed at checkout, not via a separate credit application process

The Technology Gap This Creates

Meeting these expectations requires infrastructure that most B2B wholesalers and distributors do not have: a properly configured WooCommerce B2B plugin (or Shopify B2B), an ERP integration that syncs real-time pricing and credit data, and an order portal that reads from the ERP. These requirements are not technically exotic — but they require deliberate integration architecture rather than a standard e-commerce setup.

The B2B merchants winning in 2026 are the ones who treated their buyer portal like a product — invested in the UX, integrated their ERP data in real time, and eliminated the friction that makes buyers default to a competitor who already has a better portal. The technology is available. The investment is a decision.
