Quick Summary

Why Your Google Traffic Just Dropped — And It Is Not Your SEO

  • Google’s AI Overviews (previously SGE) now answer a significant percentage of informational queries directly in the search results page — meaning the user never clicks through to your site.
  • Informational blog traffic (how-to guides, explainers, comparison posts) is the most affected category — exactly the content most e-commerce and SaaS blogs invest heavily in.
  • The traffic that remains is higher-intent: people who already know what they want and are in buying mode. Conversion rates are up but raw traffic is down.
  • The adaptation: publish content that AI Overviews cannot summarise effectively — original data, first-person experience, specific opinions, and proprietary research that does not exist anywhere else on the web.

If you run an e-commerce or SaaS business blog, you have probably noticed the same thing everyone else is noticing in 2026: organic traffic is down, but leads and sales are holding steady or improving. This is not a coincidence. Google’s AI Overviews are eating informational traffic while high-intent transactional queries still drive clicks. The SEO playbook needs rewriting — not because SEO is dead, but because Google has changed what search does.

What AI Overviews Are Eating

The queries where AI Overviews now answer without a click are exactly the “top of funnel” content most marketing teams invested in:

  • “How does NetSuite pricing work” → AI Overview explains it in 200 words. No click needed.
  • “What is the difference between WooCommerce and Shopify” → Answered in the SERP. You lost that visitor.
  • “How to set up WooCommerce” → Tutorial summarised. Your 3,000-word guide gets no traffic.

Meanwhile: “NetSuite WooCommerce integration agency London” and “buy custom ERP integration” still send clicks because the AI cannot fulfill transactional or local intent.

The Content That Survives

1
Original research and data

AI Overviews cannot summarise data that does not exist on the web yet. Your own survey results, your own A/B test data, your own client aggregate statistics — these cannot be scraped and regurgitated. “We analysed 100 WooCommerce integrations and found…” ranks and gets clicked because no one else has that data.

2
Specific opinions and hot takes

AI Overviews avoid controversy and present balanced perspectives. A post titled “Why Celigo is the Wrong Choice for Growing NetSuite Integrations” expresses a specific, defensible opinion that an AI Overview will not replicate. Opinions attract clicks from people who agree or disagree — both are valid.

3
Experience-based content

First-person accounts of doing a specific thing (“We migrated a 200-SKU WooCommerce store to HPOS and here is exactly what broke”) cannot be fabricated by AI. The specificity and the “I was there” authority create content that AI Overviews cite rather than replace.
